About Us

At the heart of a vibrant urban/rural community of over 96,000, Strathcona County Library (SCL) encourages literacy and lifelong learning, fosters community connections, and offers programs and services that inform, engage, and entertain. SCL provides excellent and accessible services from its Central Library in the Strathcona County Community Centre, its award-winning Bookmobile, and  satellite book returns throughout the community.

Are You Page Material?
Are you interested in working at the library? Do you have a keen eye for details? Come join our Page team where you will work evenings and weekends through the school year to help us shelve materials.

Pages shelve each and every item that gets returned to the library and help us monitor the organization of materials on our shelves to ensure everything is locatable.

The minimum job requirements are: 15 years of age and a high school student.

Customer Service Specialist (Customer Service)

This is a permanent, part-time, 15 hour/week position with an anticipated start date of Aug 14, 2017. This position involves daytime, evenings and weekends.

Hourly Rate is: $27.38 - $34.21 paid on a bi-weekly basis.

This position is responsible for the following duties and reports to the Manager, Customer Service

  • Provide people entering the Library with a friendly first point of contact
  • Check out materials to borrowers while observing loan period rules and item limits
  • Register and renew borrower memberships and update borrower records
  • Answer main library switchboard inquiries and direct calls to other departments as required
  • Provide directional and basic reference assistance and perform regular roaming duties

Grade 12 Diploma or GED; 1 year related experience.


  • Understanding of the Dewey Decimal System and other shelving systems used for library collections desirable
  • Proficiency with Horizon software including the ability to search for materials and manage patron accounts desirable
  • Excellent communication skills both verbally and in writing
  • Strong interpersonal skills to interact with public and co-workers
  • Working knowledge of the Microsoft Office programs including Word, Excel and Outlook

Information Desk Assistant (Adult Services)

This is a temporary, part-time, 20 hour/week position from August 28, 2017 April 27, 2017.
This position involves primarily weekday evening and weekend shifts.

Hourly Rate: $28.74 - $35.94 paid on a bi-weekly basis.

This position is responsible for the following duties and reports to the Assistant Manager,
Adult Services.

  • Provide professional research, readers' services, and tech assistance to patrons of all ages, including on-on-one and group instruction.
  • Provide support for library programs, collections and services, including program delivery.
  • Promote library programs and services.
  • Other duties as required.


  • Completion of the first year of a post-secondary degree or diploma in Library and Information Science or Information Management and Library Technology is desirable.
  • Completion of a post-secondary reference course is desirable; equivalent experience may be considered.
  • Experience working with the public preferably in a library setting is required.
  • Demonstrated familiarity with library technologies, popular culture, adult fiction and nonfiction is required.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a collaborative environment is required.
  • Demonstrated customer service, decision making, and problem solving skills in a public service environment is required.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications is required.

We encourage applications from post-secondary students returning to full-time library studies in September 2017.

Muriel Abdurahman Volunteer Award

Volunteer award glass artThe Muriel Abdurahman Volunteer Award is presented each year to a deserving Strathcona County Library volunteer or volunteer group. Recipients may not necessarily be the most widely known volunteers at the library, or the longest-serving volunteers, but the recipients will be volunteers with passion and commitment for the work that they do.

Next nomination will happen in March 2018.
