Happy Seniors’ Week

Every June, communities across Alberta celebrate Seniors' Week, a time to recognize and celebrate our older adults and the role they play in our communities. But did you know that Seniors' Week began in Strathcona County? The week was inspired by the vision of Alice Modin, who campaigned to start a seniors' day in Strathcona County. The first Seniors' Week was held in 1986.

This year Seniors' Week happens from June 3 to June 9, 2024. WESeniors will be hosting a celebration event on Tuesday, June 4th from 9:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. in the Agora (the big hall in the Community Centre, right by the library). There will be guest speakers, games, a free BBQ, door prizes and lots more. Stop by the library's table to say hi and pick up a magnifying bookmark (while supplies last).

At the library, we're hosting a Mindfulness & Memoir Writing program for seniors with our 2024 Writer in Residence, Katie Bickell.  Later in June we've got our popular Memory & Board Games program (June 14 from 1:00–3:00 p.m.). And our BetterU topic for June is Abraham Lincoln (June 21, 10:00–11:30 a.m.).

Our library staff will also be out in the community, visiting several seniors' lodges, apartments, and care homes. Our bookmobile makes regular visits to these places, bringing library materials to seniors where they live. And our Outreach Team offers a variety of programs at seniors lodges and care homes, on topics like armchair travel, tech help, and current event discussions.

Want to keep celebrating seniors beyond the days of Seniors Week? Borrow a book or movie that features older adults as the main characters.
